Presidential Inaugurations & Use of the Bible

When U.S. Presidents take the oath of office, most* have placed their left hand upon a Bible during that solemn moment, raised their right hand, and repeated the oath of office — adding the unofficial words “so help me God” at the end, as was first done by George Washington. On most occasions the Bible has been open to a specific verse.

For his second inauguration [in January 2013], reports a UPI website, President Obama selected three Bibles to use for his oath of office: the Robinson family Bible, the Lincoln Bible and Martin Luther King’s traveling Bible. The family Bible was used at the private swearing-in ceremony on Sunday, January 20, 2013, and the other two were used in the public ceremony on the following Monday. UPI reported that “both bibles were be closed, rather than open to a specific verse, when Obama took the oath of office Monday, as was the Robinson Bible on Sunday.”

William Bennett in his book The American Patriot’s Almanac: Daily Readings on America provides some examples of Scripture passages used by various presidents at their inauguration; others can easily be found by searching online.

Abraham Lincoln, 1861 – opened his Bible at random. In 1865 he used an open Bible, since lost, and noted 3 verses: “Judge not, that ye be not judged”, Matthew 7:1; “Woe to the man by whom the offence cometh!” Matthew 18:7; and, “Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments” Revelation 16:7.

Rutherford Hayes, 1877 – “They compassed me about like bees; they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the Lord I will destroy them.” Psalm 118:11-13

Theodore Roosevelt, 1905 –
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror.” James 1:22–23

Woodrow Wilson, 1917 –

Johnson used a missal–a book used for Catholic Mass–found on a side table in Kennedy’s Air Force One bedroom.”

Spiritual basis of liberty

Our founding fathers “were a people who came under the influence of a great spiritual development and acquired a great moral power said President 1420900_87673103Calvin Coolidge on this date (July 5th) in 1926. He was in Philadelphia to a speech commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The whole text is available here. Coolidge emphasized that “in its main features the Declaration of Independence is a great spiritual document.”

Such clarity of thought and understanding is near extinct in our land, so I urge you to read the speech, and breath its fresh and vital air. Here is an excerpt —

No other theory is adequate to explain or comprehend the Declaration of Independence. It is the product of the spiritual insight of the people. We live in an age of science and of abounding accumulation of material things. These did not create our Declaration. Our Declaration created them. The things of the spirit come first. Unless we cling to that, all our material prosperity, overwhelming though it may appear, will turn to a barren scepter in our grasp. If we are to maintain the great heritage which has been bequeathed to us, we must be like-minded as the fathers who created it. We must not sink into a pagan materialism. We must cultivate the reverence which they had for the things that are holy. We must follow the spiritual and moral leadership which they showed.

Yes, the things of the spirit come first! May liberty yet be revived in our land.

Happy Birthday Library of Congress

On April 24, 1800, President John Adams signed the bill authorizing the creation of The Library of Congress in Washington D.C., which has become the world’s largest library. Bill Bennett, author of The American Patriot’s Almanac, says that it is “perhaps the greatest collection of stored knowledge in history.” Here’s the rest of his piece celebrating the LOC….

It contains more than 140 million items, including maps, photographs, films, and recordings, on 650 miles of bookshelves. About 10,000 items are added every workday.

Congress established the library on April 24, 1800, when President John Adams signed a bill appropriating $5,000 for “the purchase of such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress” after it moved to Washington, the new capital city. The first books, ordered from London, arrived in 1801. The original collection consisted of 740 volumes and 3 maps.

The first collection was destroyed during the War of 1812 when the British burned the Capitol. Thomas Jefferson offered to replace it by selling Congress his personal library, one of the finest in the country. In 1815 Congress appropriated $23,950 to buy his 6,487 books. The Jefferson collection became the core of the Library of Congress.

The library serves as the research arm of Congress and the “storehouse of the national memory.” Unlike many other national libraries, its collection is not for scholars only. Anyone over high school age may use it. It also makes available, via the Internet, millions of files containing digitized versions of its collections. A library of the people, it has become a symbol of Americans’ faith in the power of learning.

Thoughts on the Presidential Election

Like so many I was stunned and saddened by the election results on Tuesday night. And I am terribly sad not because my choice for office lost but because of the awful repercussion the re-election of such a liberal administration will bring to our land. Actions have consequences; elections have consequences.

Insightful analysis is made by Dr Al Mohler here; let me share a few excerpts with you (emphasis added).

Evangelical Christians must see the 2012 election as a catastrophe for crucial moral concerns. The election of President Obama returns a radically pro-abortion President to the White House, soon after he had endorsed same-sex marriage. President Obama is likely to have the opportunity to appoint one or more justices to the U.S. Supreme Court, and they are almost sure to agree with his constitutional philosophy. …
Clearly, we face a new moral landscape in America, and huge challenge to those of us who care passionately about these issues. We face a worldview challenge that is far greater than any political challenge, as we must learn how to winsomely convince Americans to share our moral convictions about marriage, sex, the sanctity of life, and a range of moral issues. This will not be easy. It is, however, an urgent call to action.

Christians must now pray for our President, he also reminds us, citing 1 Timothy 2:1-2. You can read all of Dr Mohler’s thoughts here. (Some have labeled the election in even stronger spiritual terms, such as Tom Chantry at his blog).

Wednesday night at our church prayer meeting, I wanted to address these concerns, and move beyond political language and context. So I shared two verses from the Bible, from Isaiah 3:10-11. This was the text chosen by the puritan Thomas Watson for his farewell sermon, when hundreds of “non-conformist” pastors were ejected from their churches in 1662. This passage of Scripture gives clear words of encouragement for the righteous, and, words of woe for the wicked.

“10 Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them,
for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds.
11 Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him,
for what his hands have dealt out shall be done to him.”

Those who are walking uprightly, by the mercy and grace of the Lord, have much for which to be thankful! And horrible circumstances around us cannot change that. Our God also gave us Romans 8:28 in the New Testament, to emphasize His sovereignty and His good designs for His people in all circumstances. Yet, evidently, believers must be told these things. Repeatedly.

This text from Isaiah 3 also puts forward a warning to the wicked, to those who do not walk rightly with their God – such as those who destroy life in the womb, and who boldly promote immorality as marriage, etc. Things will not go well for you, says the Lord. There will be an accounting.

The New Testament text to keep in mind here, for Americans and people everywhere, is from Galatians 6:7-10

“Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.”

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. Celebrating rebellion?

The esteemed theologian/pastor, Dr Derek Thomas is an Irishman living in the USA (recently moving from Jackson, MS to Greenville, SC). He has done some musing online about Christians, patriotism, and “rebellion” — at the Reformation21 blog. [I would, perhaps, want to qualify the term “rebellion” but that’s for another time]. He references some British history and some Scriptures, and raises a couple of interesting questions for us, as we celebrate the 4th of July shortly.

Having been silent for a while (a move to South Carolina, “God’s Country” as it is known in these parts, rendered me comatose for a season) I have been reflecting on the issue of rebellion against authority. I am, of course, a Celt and rebellion is genetic.

The reason for this diversion of though is partly due to a gift from the dear folks at Second Presbyterian Church, Greenville. Rick Phillips and Mel Duncan attended my installation at First Presbyterian Church, Columbia and gave me a book — a history of South Carolina — a fascinating tale of rich heritage and, yes, rebellion. Having endured the pain of acquiring a new South Carolina driver’s license — a process which the best part of an afternoon — I am a South Carolinian now. Of this later, but I mention it as the trigger that initiated the thought process which follows.

On July 2, 1644, Oliver Cromwell won a famous victory against Prince Rupert, the king’s son. The King, Charles 1, from his headquarters in Oxford, had ordered his son to go to the relief of the city of York against which Cromwell had begun to lay siege. The Prince’s army was routed. The King lost his army (an estimated 16,000 of Charles’s men were killed) and his Catholic wife (the cause of much of the trouble) fled to France.

Charles’ blunder was to offend the Scots (always a bad thing). Needing money to fund the war, he convened Parliament (which hadn’t met in a decade) — also a bad thing, since it was largely Puritan. It is doubtful that the Puritans were pro-Scot; more certain is the fact that they were anti-establishment, particularly since the establishment was prone to implement a particularly English form of church government and practice by force if necessary. Scotland, understandably, was defiant and declared itself Presbyterian. All this is well known, even if I summarize it here all too simply.

My point, on this anniversary weekend that commemorates an act of rebellion, is simply to ask, which side would you have been on? Cromwell himself was of no doubt that God was on his side. He wrote of the battle to a father whose son had been killed by Royalist cannon shot (they were forced to amputate his leg and he subsequently died), saying, “It had all the evidences of an absolute victory obtained by the Lord’s blessing upon the Godly Party…”

Rick has marvelously directed our thoughts to a biblical understanding of Patriotism (it is staggering to see how patriotism is an offensive idea in Britain and Europe generally today). But where does obedience to Romans 13:1-7 or 1 Peter 2:13 end? The apostle Peter was of no doubt that obedience to authority is not without limit: situations arise where Christian must follow a biblically informed conscience to obey God and not man (or country) (Acts 4:20, 5:29).

Are Christians justified in protesting at abortion clinics, for example? And if so, what form of protest is justifiable? Were Christians in the right to break the laws of racial separation in the southern states of America in the 1960s because they denied the fundamental equality of man before the law? The state may properly pass laws that may cause us some pain and discomfort, but if it forbids us to carry out what God requires, or encourage what God has forbidden, some form of civil disobedience, with acceptance of its penal consequences (showing that we recognize the God-given authority of civil government), is inescapable. This is, of course, decidedly unpatriotic.

Perhaps, on this holiday weekend, we should ask: am I willing to do the right thing — the Jesus thing, even if this means disobeying the prevailing authority?

Prayer at the Michigan State house today

My old friend from Bethlehem Baptist church days, Brent Nelson, Pastor of Five Points Community Church has been asked to deliver an invocation today at the Michigan State House of Representative at 10 AM. Below is the planned text of his prayer [boldface added by me] — an outstanding bit of praise to God and petition.

Almighty God and heavenly Father, eternal Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, near and sovereign Holy Spirit of God I stand before your triune glory among those gathered in this honorable assembly to cherish your worth and grace over all that exists.

When we cherish you as you deserve, your glory is maximized and our good is optimized for this life and the life to come.

To that end I would ask of you these things, O Lord:

That you would strengthen and establish Christ-exalting churches in this state, in that your presence resides with us by their presence, and because the church will outlast every other institution.

I ask that you would strengthen the communities of this great State by sustaining the schools, businesses, health providers and governments, and thus preserve honor and order in our society.

I ask that you would protect healthy families and marriages from all that threatens them and make every home an emotionally, physically and spiritually safe place in which to grow.

I pray that you grant an atmosphere of respect, kindness, and dignity for all persons in this state. As bearers of your image, each person would be afforded the value that is theirs intrinsically.

To that end, I pray that you would make abortion as unthinkable as slavery.

I pray that you would bless the economic climate of this state. Grant us to be wise stewards of the wealth you have entrusted to us, knowing that to the one who is faithful with little, more will be given and that to whom much is given, much is required.

I would ask for all those in state public service, these Representatives, Governor Snyder, Lt. Governor Calley, State Supreme Court Justices and all others, that you would bless them with your wisdom, grace and insight. Continue to guard them from the moral pitfalls that can endanger their office of public service. Grant them foresight to craft laws and enact policies that best serve the State of Michigan. Bless them as they serve with the knowledge that they have been instituted by God in their role and for this time.

Because of their leadership, cause the citizens of this ‘pleasant peninsula’ to be both thankful to you O God, and well-prepared to hear the gospel of your Son. The news that it is by your grace alone, O God, than any can respond by faith alone – trusting wholly in Christ’s payment for sin and in His righteousness unto salvation — for the glory of God alone.”

In all these things, dear Lord, the priceless worth of your glory will be seen yet not only seen, but cherished, and this most plainly in the face of your Son. In whose name, I pray all these things. Amen.

My Memorial Day Prayer

Almighty God, our Father in heaven — 
As we gather on this Memorial Day, we bow our heads and thank you, Lord, for pouring out your great mercy and your amazing grace upon America. We have been blessed, perhaps more than any other nation in the history of world — and we acknowledge Your hand in all of this.

Yet these blessings — of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness — have not been received or maintained without a price, a price so often paid by members of our armed forces with their blood and with their lives. We gather this day to remember their sacrifice, to honor their service and to cherish our legacy of freedom.

Lord, may Your grace and peace be with every family that has lost loved ones in the service of our country. May we support them, and stand with them.

Lord protect and preserve each & every American soldier, sailor, marine and airman serving our country at this dangerous hour of world history.

Finally, remind us Lord, that freedom must still be guarded, and that each generation much share in paying its price. May we be sobered and challenged by the words of George Washington (from his first inaugural address): “The preservation of the sacred fire of liberty and the destiny of the republican model of government are … deeply, perhaps finally staked on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the the American people.”

On this Memorial Day, Lord, we humbly ask for Your blessing upon all gathered here, and upon our great country.

This I pray, in Jesus’ name, AMEN.

How Shall We Pray About the Upheavals in the Middle East?

Recently John Piper wrote at the Desiring God blog an answer to the question, How Shall We Pray About the Upheavals in the Middle East?

In 1 Timothy 2:1–4, Paul connects prayer for “all who are in high positions” with a peaceful life for the followers of Jesus, and with his desire for all people to be saved.

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

There are two goals in praying for kings and leaders—that is, for political structures that exist, or might exist, in the Middle East.

1. We pray for political leaders and structures . . . “that we [the followers of Jesus] may lead a peaceful and quiet life godly and dignified in every way.”

J. N. D. Kelly comments, “In other words, not being exposed to the suspicion of disloyalty, they will be allowed to practice their religion without fear of disturbance and to lead the morally serious lives appropriate to it.” (The Pastoral Epistles, p. 61). That is one important thing we should pray for.

2. We pray for this politically sustained freedom and peace so that more and more people would be saved.

This is found in verse 3: “This [politically protected peaceable life] is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved.” In other words, God approves of this kind of peaceable situation for believers (and the prayers that pursue it) because he wants more people to be saved.

The assumption is that a stable, peaceable situation in general makes for better long-term effective evangelism and missions. Very few persecuted churches that fear for their lives are mounting great global mission efforts to complete the Great Commission. As Philip Ryken writes in his commentary on 1 Timothy, “Peacetime mission is part of God’s plan for the salvation of the world, so pray for peace” (p. 63).

When we pray for the Middle East, we should be praying mainly for conditions to prevail that sustain freedom and peace for the followers of Jesus, so that the gospel would run and triumph, and millions would turn to Christ and be saved for his great glory.

Such conditions would include freedom for other religions too, since Christians do not spread their faith by the sword, but by proclamation and service (John 18:36).

Father in heaven, and Lord of all nations, rule over the Middle East in these tumultuous days so that political leaders and laws and practices are established that support peace and freedom for the followers of your Son. We praise you that you are not a tribal deity, and that you desire people of all ethnic groups to be saved through the blood and righteousness of Jesus Christ. In ways we cannot imagine, O God, govern the minds and hearts and systems and regimes and authority structures and intrigues and revolutions and constitutions and localities and neighborhood networks so that your people have protection, provision, peace, and spiritual power to lead holy lives, filled with fruitful passion to reach millions with the gospel. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Here is a “Prayer for Godly Leaders” by David Campell, pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Carlisle, PA. It comes from a new book from DayOne, In a Heart Cries to Heaven, a compilation of his prayers. [thanks to Tim Challies for mentioning this]

Our great and gracious God,

We pray that you will give us leaders who fear your name. We ask for those who are in authority over us that they may be men and women of Christian integrity, men and women imbued with the principles of the Word of God, who will themselves walk in your ways and set an example in public office.

We ask, Lord, that you will not give us up to the sway of those who care nothing for you and for your laws. Give us godly leaders, we pray.

We pray, too, for godly leaders within the church.

We pray for the reformation of the visible church and for great revival within its midst. May those who are in the positions of leadership manifest the same qualities that we see manifest supremely in our Lord Jesus Christ, and that, under the leadership of such men, your church would flourish.

Give us all grace, we pray.

Everyone who is a member of this congregation or of another congregation, to be a good and faithful servant of Jesus Christ, each one of us. We pray that you will bless our time together to that end.

We pray that you will stand with your servant as he opens up the Word, that you will put words in his mouth, that you will give to us illumined minds and hearts, and we pray that you will make that Word written upon our hearts and make our time together to be truly a means of grace, that we, in this week that is before us, may walk in your ways.

Hear us, O God, we pray, and these prayers and the many others that in the silence of our hearts we would lift to you, the omniscient God.

Hear us, for Jesus’ sake.
